When to Use GIF vs Video
GIF is the right choice when you need universal autoplay without user interaction. MP4 video is the right choice when you need efficient file sizes, audio, or longer duration.

Use GIF when:
- Sharing in Slack, Discord, or Teams (messaging apps treat GIFs differently than video files)
- Embedding in documentation, README files, or blog posts without a video player
- Creating reaction clips or memes where loop behavior is expected
- The clip is short (under 10 seconds) and you need it to just work everywhere
Use MP4 video when:
- The clip is longer than 10 seconds (GIF file sizes become unmanageable)
- You need audio
- You are posting to a social media platform (most now support autoplay video natively)
- File size matters (MP4 is dramatically more efficient)
For social media specifically: TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube all support autoplay video. There is no practical advantage to using GIF over MP4 on these platforms — and the MP4 will be smaller and higher quality.
How to Convert Video to GIF with Framebit
Step 1: Upload your video
Open Framebit's video to GIF converter and drag your video clip into the upload area. MP4, MOV, and WebM files are all supported.
For GIF conversion, shorter clips are much better. A 3–8 second loop is the sweet spot. A 30-second GIF at any reasonable frame rate will be enormous.
Step 2: Select your clip range
If you uploaded a longer video and want only a specific segment as your GIF, set the in and out points to isolate that portion. The selection tools work the same as a video trimmer.
Step 3: Choose your GIF settings
Width — set the output width in pixels. GIFs do not need to be large. 480px wide is sufficient for most chat and documentation use. 640px is good for blog embeds. Going above 800px creates large files with minimal visual benefit.
Frame rate — 10fps is the standard. It looks smooth for most motion without bloating the file. For very smooth animation (fluid liquid, smooth text reveals), try 15fps. For memes or reaction GIFs where the choppiness is part of the aesthetic, 8fps works fine.
Loop — GIFs loop infinitely by default. You can set them to play a fixed number of times or play once. For most use cases, infinite loop is correct.
Step 4: Export

Managing GIF File Size
GIF files are large. Understanding why helps you control the size.
The GIF problem: unlike MP4, GIF stores every frame as a full image. A 6-second clip at 15fps contains 90 individual frames. Each frame is a full image compressed using a palette of only 256 colors. High-color, photorealistic content produces enormous GIF files because the 256-color limitation forces heavy dithering.
How to reduce GIF size:
Lower the frame rate. Going from 15fps to 10fps reduces frame count by 33% — and file size drops proportionally.
Reduce the output width. A 480px wide GIF is one-fourth the file size of a 960px wide GIF.
Use shorter clips. Every second at 10fps is 10 more frames. A 4-second clip is half the size of an 8-second clip.
Avoid gradients and photographic detail. GIF's 256-color limit handles flat colors and simple graphics efficiently but struggles with photographs. For photorealistic content, an MP4 clip is almost always a better choice.

For Slack and Discord, staying under 5MB keeps the GIF fast to load on slow connections. For GitHub READMEs, under 3MB is respectful to mobile users.
GIF vs WebP vs APNG: The Format Landscape
GIF is not technically the best animated image format — but it is the most universally supported.
WebP achieves the same animation quality in 20–40% less file size. Supported in modern browsers and most messaging apps. Not universally supported in email or older systems.
APNG supports full 24-bit color (versus GIF's 256 colors) and alpha transparency. Looks dramatically better on photographic content. Less widely supported than WebP.
GIF is the safe default. When in doubt about compatibility, GIF works. Its ubiquity more than compensates for its technical inefficiency.
