How to Trim a Video Online for Free (No Software Needed)

Trimming a video is the single most common video editing task — and it is also the most frustrating to do in a full desktop editor. Loading Adobe Premiere or DaVinci Resolve to remove the first 10 seconds of a clip is like using a hammer to swat a fly.

Most of the time, you do not need full video editing software. You need a simple trimmer: set a start, set an end, download the result. This guide shows you how to do that for free, in your browser, without installing anything.

What Trimming Is (and Is Not)

Knowing the vocabulary helps you pick the right tool.

Trimming — removing content from the beginning and/or end of a video to shorten it. You have a 5-minute video and you want the middle 2 minutes. Trimming sets a new in-point and out-point.

Cutting / splitting — removing a section from the middle of a video and joining the remaining pieces. "I want to cut out the 30-second tangent at the 2-minute mark." This is technically more complex than trimming.

Re-encoding — when a video is trimmed, the tool must either re-encode the video (process every frame again) or cut losslessly at keyframe boundaries. Re-encoding takes time and can introduce quality loss. Lossless cuts are instant and quality-perfect — but can only be exact at keyframe boundaries.

How to Trim a Video with Framebit
